Well, when you see this message, it just means content in your site has low value as you have too much non-original content within your site. It could be you have too much of “other people’s website content” or taken too much feeds from other sites. Whichever way is it, with a website like that it’s not going to have much success with Google search results.
So how can we rectify that?
Well Google’s engineer Matt Cutts posted a video on this issue identifying what kind of sites risk having their content classified as thin content with little value.
Mainly they are 3 different categories: Door Way Sites, Thin Affiliate Sites and Thin Syndication Sites. So if your site happens to be classified under any of these 3 categories, then you may run the risk of getting penalized by Google.
To rectify the problem for you site, you have to first identify and understand what those 3 categories are. So since we have identified the 3 categories, we now move on to understanding them.
1. Door way sites explained
Door way sites are sites with tons of low quality repetitive pages of no value. In other words, doorways are created solely to manipulate search results by having many different pages with the same lines of content but a different keyword. Each of these pages will then have a link like an “Enter” button to direct users to a single destination which is their main website. An example of a typical doorway would be having a site with different domain names that have similar content but different keywords and from those pages they will funnel users to on specific page.
Does that sound familiar? If it does then it’s possible that your site may become a doorway site be it intentionally or unintentionally. So to avoid this, instead of creating many pages with the same few lines and then redirect users from there to your actual landing page, you may want to just index and optimize your actual landing page.
2. Thin Affiliates explained
An affiliate site is one where advertisers display other people’s products on their own website through an image or link. When visitors click on the ad, they will be directed to that particular service or product site. And when those visitors made a purchase, these advertisers will get a share of the profit.
Now you must be wondering, “What’s wrong with that”? Well, there’s nothing wrong with affiliate marketing. In fact, affiliate marketing if done correctly can bring in huge traffic and great conversions. However, over here we are not just talking about plain affiliate marketing but more on how affiliate marketing can turn bad for your site. After all, it’s a fine line difference between good affiliate marketing and thin affiliating.
So what’s the difference? Well, thin affiliate sites are filled with many advertisements of other websites and have very little unique or original content. Meaning it’s completely focused on affiliate links like PPC ads or links to other merchants and they offer no value to visitors.
Now to solve this, you would have to ask yourself what you can offer to your visitors that other similar sites can’t. Just like how Matt Cutts explained in the video, you should provide your valuable opinion about the products you’re advertising. And if you haven’t used any of those products you’re advertising, you could always interview a friend or family that had already experienced that product or service. Get them to do a review or a comparison then set up a video blog or write an article about it before ending it with a “Call to Action” which in this case will be your affiliate link! This would not only get you better search engines results but genuine readership and most importantly genuine customers.
3. Thin Syndication sites explained
Thin Syndication simply means pulling content from other websites. There’s nothing really wrong with that. However, it does turn bad if you pulled too many content from low quality article sites or article banks. Pulling articles just for the sake of fulfilling your keywords totally doesn’t add any value to visitors but rather frustrates them. And this is something goggle hates.
This is why it’s best to avoid thin syndication entirely. Start writing articles yourself, if you can’t find a writer or a copywriter. Give him or her what you would like to see within your article in point form and spend some money on these writers as I assure you with great articles come genuine readers and customers.
On the whole, just bear in mind that Goggle is way bigger than you. There is no way you can take the shortcut or cheat your way out with the search results. Even if you succeeded in manipulating search results, eventually it will come back and bite you hard. Start optimizing the right way, always think about creating value for your readers and gaining their trust. This way you will not have to worry about receiving thin content messages from Google.
